In this post we’re gonna cover a few basics so that you can begin thinking about the all-important script for your AdToons video. And you’ll learn how to avoid some of the most common script missteps.
This will help you not only in creating a powerful video, but also with marketing your products or services in general on websites and brochures, etc.
Okay, here we go.
Scriptwriting mistake #1
One of the biggest mistakes that businesses make in their marketing literature is being slanted towards the “I” instead of “you.”
No one cares about you – so save it.
What this means is: do not write about you. Don’t tell them how long you’ve been in business. Don’t tell them how many board members you have. Don’t tell about your education and how great and wonderful you are.
The reason: web visitors don’t care.
There is a time and place for all that information and what we call proof, which is evidence we can deliver on our promises.
But the challenge is, most businesses write mostly about how great they are as a company and never consider why someone would want to buy from them.
Scriptwriting mistake #2
The next mistake people make is being featured-based and not benefit-driven in their message. By that I mean that people don’t go to hardware stores to buy drills. They go there because they need a hole in the wall. Another example… they don’t sign their kids up for after-school tutoring. They want their kids to get into a good college so they can have a successful career and life.
Scriptwriting mistake #3
The last mistake I will cover is writing copy that is NOT emotionally driven. And it doesn’t mean simply using words that show emotion like happy, sad, angry, and so on.
I heard this from a top salesman one time: what is closer to the wallet, the heart or the head?
The heart. So speak to what motivates your buyer’s heart, which is more emotionally-driven. And speak less to their head, which is driven by logic.
People buy on emotion. Then, as a marketer, you back it with logic.
Take the car buying process. The average person doesn’t buy a car. They buy an experience.
I’m a fan of Bruce Springsteen. And once I found out I could get E Street Radio in my new Jeep, it made it that much more appealing. I could see myself cruising down the road blasting the Boss with my friends.
I could hardly contain my excitement.
And the salesman could smell blood in the water! 🙂
Now, I had previously liked the SUV but now I was sold.
Nobody says I gotta have that car because it gets 24.5 miles to the gallon. Or because it has 13 cubic feet of storage. Or because there are six cup holders.
Instead you need go get at the emotional aspect. So if we were writing a script we’d focus on stories like:
• Pulling in to parking lot where the family reunion is and seeing your family’s jaws drop.
• How the car’s safety features will protect your family.
• The car’s DVD entertainment system, which will keep your kids occupied during long road trips.
So, what are some of the benefits to doing business with your company?
Once you figure this out, you have the key to open the door to wealth and prosperity.
